Heading towards a more sustainable and socially conscious NOMON

In late 2019, we embarked on a journey towards making NOMON DESIGN more sustainable and socially responsible. This journey was driven by the enthusiasm of our team and our shared vision regarding the pivotal role of design as a catalyst for change.

By January 2020, motivated to transform into a branding agency that is as socially and environmentally responsible as possible, we outlined a series of measures. These measures gradually became part of our daily operations, and we took on an even greater commitment – achieving B Corp certification.

A few months later, with the advent of the pandemic, this process slowed down due to new challenges, prompting us to adapt to the evolving circumstances. Nevertheless, we persisted in implementing new measures and formalizing existing ones, such as flexible work arrangements, all the while remaining steadfast in our chosen path.

 

We participated in Barcelona Activa’s Responsible Companies Program

To realize our goal, we immersed ourselves in the world of sustainability for several months and undertook Barcelona Activa’s Responsible Companies Program. This program provided us with knowledge, resources, and guidance to better identify and define our roadmap.

Our first step was to establish our Sustainability Plan, which spans across all aspects of the agency: governance, employment, economics, social, and environmental.

 

We formed our Sustainability Council

To ensure the proper implementation of our Sustainability Plan and its continuous improvement, one of our initial measures was to create the NOMON DESIGN Sustainability Council.

Comprising various roles and profiles within the agency, it is led by the General Management. This council is not only responsible for overseeing the implementation of the plan but also for revising and adapting it to the ever-changing reality of the agency.

Furthermore, it ensures that the entire NOMON team stays informed about new sustainability-related measures, decisions, and changes while collecting their valuable input.

 

What have we achieved during these initial months?

The establishment of the council enabled us to define the guidelines and timelines of the Sustainability Plan more clearly, resulting in increased productivity in recent months.

We concurrently addressed each area of the agency, reviewing existing documentation, formalizing and reformulating previously implemented measures, and introducing new ones, including:

→ Building on the review of our Mission, Vision, and Values, we developed our Ethical Code.

→ We shared our Penalty Regime with the entire NOMON DESIGN team after a comprehensive review.

Contracts were updated to include telecommuting, and our Privacy and Confidentiality Policy now applies to all our employees.

→ We established a Protocol for preventing, detecting, and addressing sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination.

We joined the Barcelona + Sostenible network, which provided us access to sustainability resources that expanded our perspective. We also had the opportunity to learn from other companies that share our vision for promoting sustainable development.

→ In an effort to enhance internal communication, we created participatory spaces (both digital and physical) where everyone can freely share opinions, initiatives, and criticisms, all aimed at continuously improving the agency. Additionally, we established an annual schedule of meetings between the Management and each team member to provide feedback on their performance.

Furthermore, we introduced mechanisms for NOMON DESIGN employees to participate in the Sustainability Council, with one team member serving in an advisory capacity on a rotating basis every three months.

2021 Employee Climate Survey

At the end of 2021, we conducted an Employee Climate Survey to gauge the satisfaction and well-being of NOMON DESIGN employees. This survey allowed us to tailor future actions under the Sustainability Plan to the needs and opinions of the entire team.

Environmental Measures

Our office bore witness to this process as well. We introduced a series of environmental improvements aimed at reducing the impact of our activities. These included new routines to minimize unnecessary consumption, energy control timers for certain devices, lighting modifications, and enhanced waste management.

We also developed a Supplier Sustainability Commitment to share with our collaborating companies and suppliers. This commitment encourages them to adhere to our ethical and professional conduct standards, as outlined in our Ethical Code.

Training Plan

 Informed by the findings of the Employee Climate Survey, we worked on our Training Plan to identify the needs for enhancing the skills of all our employees. Simultaneously, we aimed to bolster the overall talent pool at NOMON DESIGN.

Social Action Plan

We crafted a Social Action Plan aimed at promoting our social values and generating a positive impact on our society.

In these early months, we contributed by participating in the Fundació Banc dels Aliments’ Great Food Drive and the charity exhibition “Pazifika: Solidarity Posters for Ukraine,” organized by DIMAD and Fama Fest to raise funds for Acnur. We continue to work on other initiatives, such as our annual collaboration with the Lab de Acció Social of the Faculty of Communication and International Relations Blanquerna.

The NOMON Method

We revised our NOMON Method to incorporate sustainability into all phases of our procedure. We developed a series of questionnaires to assess the social and environmental impact and performance of our suppliers, as well as to evaluate customer satisfaction with our work.

B Corp Certification

We completed our B Impact Assessment and are currently awaiting the next steps to become a certified B Corp company.

 

We’re still at it…

Despite making significant strides in recent months, we remain committed to learning, working, and improving in every area of our agency. This dedication drives us to meet new challenges and transform into an even more sustainable and socially responsible NOMON.
