Our selection of bookstores for Sant Jordi 2022
To celebrate Sant Jordi –one of the NOMON team’s favourite days of the year– we have made a small selection of the local bookstores that we like most.
For, indeed, a digital publication cannot compete with the experience and the presence of a paper book: the texture of its covers, the crisp whisper of the turning pages, the characteristic aroma of printed ink…
For us, the reading habit remains unbeatable, and bookstores continue being the best places to find and purchase books.
One of the most beautiful days of the year is approaching, Sant Jordi. A great literary and cultural festival in Catalonia. We will definitely stroll across the streets of our city, we will stop to buy roses at the flower stalls, and will visit the bookstores to discover the latest publications.
If you also also enjoy losing yourself along the aisles of bookstores, we would like to share our small selection of shops that we love or find interesting. See below.
Terranova Bookstore and Publishing house (Barcelona)
Bookstore specializing in art books –of both national and international publishers–, which exhibits covers instead of spines, and which still preserves the old elements of the historic 1900’s shop Calzados Lluch. It is located on Comte Borrell street and opened last October 1st, 2021.
Ona Llibres (Barcelona)
Located on Pau Claris street, its 1000 m2 are dedicated to books in Catalan. Conceptualized and designed by Mediapro Exhibitions, this bookstore is much more than just a shop. It is a cultural venue where art, literature and music come together. A 21st century bookstore that surprises us with its modernity and diversity. Where the book as an object gains value and there is a balance between the digital and the analog.
Finestres Bookstore (Barcelona)
The first Finestres bookstore opened in March 2021. Located at the heart of Barcelona, the space was devised to become an entire cultural project. Just a year later, a new space popped up across the street, defined as the “largest art bookstore in Barcelona”. Set up in the modernist Casa Garriga i Nogués, you can find over 12,000 comics, illustration, photography, music, architecture and graphic design books.

Fabre Bookstore (Barcelona)
The oldest bookstore in Barcelona (second in Catalonia), specializing in children’s picture books and German literature. You can however find books for all ages and in a range of languages. Founded in 1860, this family business has been passed from father to son and has grown with the incorporation of a selection of toys and board games –ranging from the most traditional to the most innovative– all of which are made of wood and under the play&learn premise.
Sendak Bookstore (Barcelona)
Open since 2017, this Barcelona cooperative bookstore specializes in children and youth literature. The store’s name honors the American author and illustrator of numerous children and youth books, Maurice Sendak, such as “Where the Wild Things Are”. It is also a cultural space where, in addition to books, games and toys are sold and all kinds of experiences are expected.
Bookstore La Sabateria (Lleida)
Considered the ninth most beautiful bookstore in the world according to the ranking of the Greek portal Little Bookstore. Located in the historic center of Lleida, it is a space open to art and culture, where you will find new, second-hand and old books. They promote their space to sit and read, listen to music, do theater or radio, even as a location
La Llama Store (Barcelona)
Bookstore-gallery located in the neighbourhood of Barcelona’s Eixample that specializes in humour and comedy: books, illustrations, art, design objects and classic joke articles. In their space they showcase and promote all the possible creative proposals that are deemed to be funny.
«Calonge, the town of books»
We did not want to miss the opportunity to mention this cultural project, launched last December, and called “Calonge, poble de llibres” (town of books).
Promoted by the city council of Calonge and Sant Antoni, the town has become the first book town in Catalonia (and the second in the country –Urueña in Valladolid has been one since 2007–), joining the network of the world’s 53 book towns.
In May of last year, the council launched a campaign calling for people to present a bookstore project. In exchange, the town offered these bookstore entrepreneurs both financial help and tax cuts.
70 proposals were presented, of which 7 were selected. These 7 new bookstores, with totally diverse themes, are located in the historic town center and are aimed to help promote cultural, sustainable and quality tourism by revitalizing the town center.
